Part 14: RBL Bank — Grocery & Utility Focused
Welcome to Part 14. RBL Bank is highly aggressive in the co-branded credit card space (famously partnering with Bajaj Finserv and Zomato in the past). When it comes to Lifetime Free (LTF) cards, RBL focuses heavily on everyday household expenses: groceries, utilities, and movies.
🏦 RBL Bank's Core Policy
- Co-Brand Heavy: RBL Bank issues dozens of variations of essentially the same card under different brand names.
- Fee Waivers vs. LTF: RBL is notorious for charging annual fees on their core cards. However, if you apply through third-party financial aggregators (like BankBazaar, Paisabazaar, or Cred), they frequently offer these cards as unconditional LTF to acquire customers.
- Card Limits: You can hold multiple RBL cards (e.g., a Bajaj RBL card and a core RBL card).
💳 The Everyday Household Cards
1. RBL Bank ShopRite Credit Card
If you manage the grocery shopping for your household, this is the card to get.
- Status: Normally carries a ₹500 fee, but is routinely offered LTF via direct bank SMS links or third-party aggregators.
- Best For: Groceries and Movies.
- Benefits:
- 5% Value Back on Groceries: Earn 20 Reward Points for every ₹100 spent on grocery shopping (capped at 1,000 points per month).
- Movie Discounts: 10% discount on movie tickets at BookMyShow (up to ₹100) up to 15 times a year.
- Fuel: Earn 10 Reward Points for every ₹100 spent on fuel.
2. RBL Bank BankBazaar SaveMax Credit Card
A co-branded card with the aggregator BankBazaar, explicitly designed to be Lifetime Free.
- Status: Unconditionally Lifetime Free.
- Best For: EMI conversions and grocery.
- Benefits:
- 5X Reward Points on groceries.
- 10% cashback on Zomato and BookMyShow (up to ₹100 per month).
- Unique feature: Gives you accelerated rewards when you convert a large purchase into an EMI.
🎯 The TCS Employee Strategy
RBL Bank credit limits can be quite generous for IT employees. If you are a TCS employee, you should look out for the ShopRite card during promotional LTF periods.
It serves a very specific, utilitarian purpose in your wallet. Use it exclusively at D-Mart, Reliance Smart, or BigBasket to max out the grocery reward points every month, then use your HDFC or ICICI cards for everything else.
